Ramadan, the blessed “sultan of eleven months,” unites the Muslim world around a single table! Every year, thousands of people fasting search for free iftar opportunities. In Istanbul, municipalities, foundations, and local organizations set up free iftar tents for those who cannot make it home in time or need a helping hand.

Last year, ESI had the joy of supporting a traditional free iftar in Beşiktaş on March 24, 2025, where around 250 Erasmus students joined along the streets in front of local restaurants. It was a night full of community, solidarity, and laughter.

Special thanks to Teo for handling promotion & mailing (even while fasting!) and to Emir for coordinating with local tradesmen. After-iftar, we enjoyed games, socializing, and unforgettable memories together.

But that’s not all — we want to make Ramadan even bigger this year!

University Iftar Events:

  • Boğaziçi University: Campus Courtyard, nightly free iftar for students and staff.

  • Istanbul University: Main Hall, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM, open to all students.

  • Koç University: Social Center, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM, with cultural activities after dinner.

  • Sabancı University: Campus Cafeteria, community iftar followed by student games and workshops.

  • Marmara University: Faculty Cafeteria, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM, open to all students.

  • Yıldız Technical University: Student Center, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM, with live student performances.

  • İstanbul Technical University: Main Campus Hall, community iftar in selfiş sütiş, followed by discussion and networking opportunities.

 Community & Foundation Iftar Locations:

  • Üsküdar Municipal Haluk Dursun Library: Evening iftar for students and locals, with cultural readings and community discussion.

  • Beşiktaş District Streets: Traditional free iftar organized by local tradesmen, with post-iftar socializing and games.

  • Süleymaniye KİM Foundation: Free daily iftar for locals and visitors in the historic Süleymaniye area.

  • Ayasofya KİM Foundation: Evening iftar for community members and students near Ayasofya, combining tradition with cultural programming.

  • Türkistan Kitap Evi (Vezneciler) : Daily free iftar with a focus on students and young people, fostering community and cultural exchange.

  • Municipal and Foundation Iftar Tents in Istanbul:

    • VGM: Binbirdirek Cistern, Ümraniye, Üsküdar, Kartal.

    • İBB: Mecidiyeköy, Eminönü, Aksaray, Üsküdar, Çekmeköy, Kadıköy.

    • District Municipalities: Fatih, Sultangazi, Zeytinburnu, Ümraniye, Beykoz, Başakşehir, Kadıköy, Esenler, Pendik, Arnavutköy, Küçükçekmece, Bakırköy, Tuzla, Çekmeköy, Esenyurt, Şişli, Kartal, Maltepe, Ataşehir, Bayrampaşa, Silivri, Bağcılar, Beyoğlu, Şile — offering iftar tents, mobile soup services, and food distribution for those in need.
