📱 Guide to SIM Cards in Turkey (2025)

If you’re planning to visit or stay in Turkey, one of the first things you’ll need is a SIM card. Mobile internet and calls are affordable compared to Europe, and coverage is strong across the country. However, not all operators are the same. Here’s a breakdown of what you should know before buying a Turkish SIM card in 2025.

🇹🇷 Major Mobile Operators in Turkey

There are three main providers in Turkey, plus one market-based option:

  • Turkcell – The largest operator with the best network coverage and fastest speeds, especially outside big cities.

  • Vodafone Turkey – Present in many countries, with improving infrastructure and strong promotions for new customers.

  • Türk Telekom – The cheapest option, but also the weakest in terms of coverage and speed.

  • BİMcell – A budget-friendly SIM card sold through BİM supermarkets, running on Türk Telekom’s network. (It is similar to "ALDI Talk" market SIM card, which is available in Germany, Austria, Australia, Slovenia and Switzerland.)

📶 4.5G & 5G in Turkey

  • 4.5G (LTE-A) is widely available nationwide. Almost every city and town has stable 4.5G coverage.

  • 5G officially launched in limited areas: Istanbul Airport, major football stadiums (Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, Trabzonspor).

  • To use 5G:

    1. Your phone must be 5G-compatible.

    2. Your SIM card must be 4.5G-ready (most new SIMs are).

    3. You need to activate it (send SMS “5G” to 5555 on Turkcell).

🧾 Taxes & Extra Fees (2025)

All mobile operators in Turkey must charge government-mandated telecom taxes.

  • Telsiz Kullanım Ücreti (Wireless Usage Fee) → 258.04 TL per year

    • Postpaid: divided monthly (~21.50 TL/month)

    • Prepaid: paid monthly, first month slightly higher (21.54 TL)

  • Telsiz Ruhsatname Ücreti (License Fee) → 258.04 TL, charged when you buy a new line

  • Özel İletişim Vergisi (Special Communication Tax) → 10% of your monthly bill

  • KDV (VAT) → 20% on all telecom services

  • Damga Vergisi (Stamp Tax) → ~0.948% on contracts (postpaid only)

📵 IMEI Registration (Foreign Phones)

IMEI: International Mobile Equipment Identity:  The International Mobile Equipment Identity is a numeric identifier, usually unique, for 3GPP and iDEN mobile phones, as well as some satellite phones.

If you bring your own phone from abroad, it will only work with a Turkish SIM card for a limited time unless registered.

  • As of September 2025, the IMEI usage period is 120 days.

  • After that, your device will be blocked unless you pay the IMEI registration tax (45,614 TL in 2025). It equals 952 Euro or 1108 USD.

A line paired with a device whose electronic ID information has been changed can be used seamlessly on any registered device. You can find your IMEI number by typing *#06# on your device's dialing screen. Please enter the 15-digit IMEI number! Please enter the 10-digit phone number!

✅ Conclusion

  • Best Coverage & Quality → Turkcell

  • Best Value → Vodafone’s 25 GB welcome package

  • Cheapest → BİMcell (but limited coverage since it uses Türk Telekom)

  • Tourist-Friendly → Turkcell & Vodafone (easier to buy, English support, prepaid options)

If you’re only in Turkey short-term, Vodafone’s or Turkcell’s prepaid packages are the most convenient. If you plan to stay long-term, consider a postpaid (faturalı) line.

✅ How can I find my own mobile phone number in Türkiye?

All you need to do is dial *101# on your phone screen and then press the call button (Star 101 Square). Once you do this, your phone number will appear on the screen. As shown in the image below, the number of your mobile phone will appear, with your phone number listed below. Your carrier may be Turkcell, Vodafone, or Türk Telekom. It doesn't matter which carrier you use.

🔍 Other Informations

1. Tourist SIM Packages / Airport Sales

You could mention:

  • Tourist SIMs (especially from Turkcell and Vodafone) are available at airports, hotels, and tourist areas, but prices there are usually higher (up to 2000–3000 TL for a SIM + data).

  • Better to buy in a city center or non-tourist district (like Kadıköy or Beyoğlu backstreets in Istanbul).

2. Passport Requirement for SIM Purchase

Foreigners must present a passport to buy a SIM card. You might add:

📄 A valid passport is required when buying a Turkish SIM card. Photocopies are often made, and the SIM is registered to your name/passport ID.

This applies to all carriers, including BİMcell.

3. E-SIM Availability

In 2025, eSIMs are becoming more common in Turkey.

You might include:

💡 eSIM Support (2025): Turkcell and Vodafone support eSIM activation for compatible devices. Useful if you don't want a physical SIM card. Türk Telekom may have limited or no eSIM support as of late 2025.

4. IMEI Clarification for Tourists

It’s good to clarify that:

  • IMEI blocking only applies to the device (not the SIM).

  • After 120 days, only Turkish SIM cards stop working in your foreign phone. Your phone will still work with foreign SIMs.

  • Dual SIM phones can still use the second (non-Turkish) SIM if one side gets blocked.

5. APN / Mobile Data Settings

Some users might need to set the APN manually to get data working. Brief example:

📶 If mobile data doesn't work after inserting your SIM, check the APN settings:

  • Turkcell: internet

  • Vodafone TR: internet

  • Türk Telekom: internet

These are usually set automatically, but not always.

6. BİMcell SIM Availability

Worth noting:

🔹 BİMcell SIMs may not be in stock at all BİM stores. Call ahead or ask if they sell SIM cards. Activation may take longer than major brands.

7. Support in English

You might mention:

🗣️ Turkcell and Vodafone generally offer better English-speaking support, especially in tourist-heavy areas and within their mobile apps. Türk Telekom and BİMcell support is mostly in Turkish only.
